Artists using AI
Overview: The concept here is to showcase artists where one of the key mediums for creating this art is through machine learning technology. By showcasing these technologists in a social setting around Adobe Summit Cognizant will be able to lead the conversation in what is possible using AI outside of business perspective which people will be focused on all day at the Adobe Summit.
Artist 1: Refik Anadol is an LA based Turkish artist. His medium is using massive data sets to build interactive environments through machine learning and projectors. Long story short he is a data sculptor.
Examples of his work: His work is made up of millions of tiny pieces and every point represents a piece of data that has been fed through a neural network. Some of his past data sets include collecting wind data from the Boston Logan airport. He took one year worth of data that consists of the gusts speed, direction, and temperature of the weather. All of this was fed into a series of algorithms that then created a display.
Another one of his past data sets include conducting an experiment with the Neuroscape Labortory at the University of California, San Francisco to measure changes in brain wave activity while talking to patience regarding past memories. The data visualization he created replicates how the human brain process memories overtime.
Artist 2: David Gardener (Montreal Life Support) on mechanical design & visuals and Greg Debicki aka Woulg on software design. These guys created a performance of robots, cellos & artificial intelligence called Empty Vessels.
Empty Vessels is is an immersive audio visual installation that explores the connection between machines, data & their environment. The piece questions what it means to be a performer. It also looks at the shifting dichotomy of controller and controlled with regards to machines and humans.
Escape The Routine will build on top of this project to work with sensors so guests can conduct this robot orchestra.
Artist 3: Ecco Screen is a San Francisco multi media artist with a strong focus on building interactive environments via projection art.
Examples of his work: Bounding Main is an interactive projection art piece that mirrors guests movements into standing water mirror. The surface is lit up wit contrasting blue tones via projected light.
Users will be able to see themselves in the water and wade their way to the edge of the surface, never fully emerging due to the chaotic force of the waves acting against them. Yet this environment still retains a soothing quality to it, inviting the user to carefully explore this mysterious subaquatic territory.
